New ethyl acetate process to debut in South Africa
Article Abstract:
Sasol Chemical Industries plans to construct an ethyl acetate (EA) plant in Secunda, South Africa. It will be the first commercial use of Kvaerner Process Technology Ltd's process for the production of EA. The process needs only one feedstock, ethanol, instead of the usual esterification of acetic acid with ethanol. Thus, the process eliminates the need to produce or purchase acetic acid to make EA.

Germany ponders a nuclear phaseout
Article Abstract:
Chancellor Gerhard Schroder of Germany has proposed a phaseout of the currently used practice of reprocessing spent nuclear fuels by Jan 2000. The announcement has caused concerns from both France's Cogema and the UK's BNF PLC, which account for the major share of reprocessing Germany's spent nuclear fuel. Germany has earlier announced a phaseout of nuclear power over the next 20 years.
