Small-scale pervaporation plant dehydrates solvents economically
Article Abstract:
Sulzer Chemtech GmbH of Neunkirchen, Germany, is offering for commercial use a standardized, small-scale pervaporation system for dehydrating common solvents including alcohols, ketones, esters and ethers. The solvents usually make azeotropic mixtures, allowing the potential of eliminating water by simple distillation. Previously, pervaporation plants had to be custom-made for dehydrating a single solvent at capacities greater than 1 m.t./d. The new unit, called ECO, takes care of all common solvents in quantities as small as 200 L/d, according to an official.

Choose processes for their productivity
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing techniques in the chemical processing industries should be chosen on the basis of productivity. Productivity, which is defined as the measure of production factor efficiency, is the opposite of waste and is not always synonymous to high-yield processes. In chemical-process syntheses, the manufacturer must bear in mind that byproduct minimization during manufacture is a goal that could contribute higher economic benefits to the company.

Powerful fuel cell..
Article Abstract:
Ballard Power Systems Inc has introduced a new fuel-cell system called the Mark 900 module that has a power density of 1,310 watts per liter, 30% higher than its earlier Mark 700 fuel cell system. The Mark 900 powered a prototype sedan exhibited by Ford Motor Co at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new system uses a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell and generates 75 kW of power.
