Not all Cats prefer IT

Article Abstract:

Connectivity of cabling is being standardized on a global basis with the introduction of Category 6 (Cat 6) performance standards although there remains several problems with the use of RJ-45 connectors. The connector design of the RJ-45 prevents it being compatible with Cat 6 cables and therefore previous industry standards. The introduction of super plugs may help improve connectivity of RJ-45 connectors although the high-speed needed to meet requirements in Cat 6 may be compromised. Improved information sharing between manufacturers would help eliminate the connectivity issue.

Field of dreams

Article Abstract:

Sira Test and Certification is undertaking a three-year project aimed at generating greater awareness of fieldbus technology and its benefits. The scheme, known as Faces (Fieldbus Awareness Campaign and Exploitation Support), informs electrical installers of the advances in process control technology. Sira's managing director David Lewis says it is unlikely that companies will adopt a single standard to control their processes but predicts a hierarchy of fieldbuses, ranging from simple networks to more complex management networks.
