PET's new training initiatives
Article Abstract:
Planning and Environmental Training (PET)currently has links with three companies which provide teaching staff for PET's training courses,which are aimed at career development for those in the planning process. PET offers training inmanagement skills, from basics to team building, and incorporating training on safetyprocedures. PET and The Waltham Group are planning to develop more specialist managementtraining, including psychometric testing.

Exploring the missing link: how fare are the planning schools providing graduates with the right knowledge and skills for a rapidly changing employment market?
Article Abstract:
Around 50% of graduates gain employment in the planning profession with the remainder undertaking research degrees or taking other jobs. The Discipline Network in Town Planning is funded by the Department of Employment and aims to promote stronger links between higher education and employers. At their recent conference speakers told of attempts to limit the output of planning graduates in the 1980s and how jobs are becoming more kspecialised.

Article Abstract:
Issues of continuing professional development (CPD) quality are expected to feature strongly in the RTPI Council review of CPD policy, particularly relating to whether members have benefited from CPD activities. Other issues will be the prescription of CPD modes, a CPD agenda to assist members and providers and CPD certification.
