Portable CMM creates tons of casting data
Article Abstract:
Kurdiziel Industries, Inc of Muskegon, MI, which manufactures counterweights for heavy industrial equipment, relies on a portable coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) which produces repeatable digital values. The firm, which services firms such as Caterpillar Inc, Komatsu Forklift USA Inc, and Nissan Forklift Corp, uses a 12-foot, six-joint articulated arm which can read 150 data points with an accuracy of about 0.18 mm. The machine enables precise measurements of mounting-surface flatness, which is crucial in counterweight manufacturing.

Controller upgrade cuts setup, downtime, and scrap
Article Abstract:
Custom injection molder Riverside Plastics upgraded the control systems for its injection-molding machines from Solid Controls Inc to Trailblazer 10-T microprocessor controllers. The old machines, which used combination microprocessor and relay controllers, resulted to higher scrap rates because its constant injection pressures or temperatures are not sufficiently maintained. The new systems control the injection cycles, automatically compensates for variations in temperature and pressure as well as handle failures immediately.

Virtual inspection raises throughput 800%
Article Abstract:
Metalagraphics Inc adopted the use of an inspection software in an attempt to significantly reduce the queueing time involved in fabricating metals. By allowing the simulation of coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) operations, parts probes and fixtures, the software was instrumental in facilitating manufacturing processes. The company reported a remarkable 800% increase in throughput and 65% improvement in CMM-programming time. The software, designed by CimStation Inspection, also reduced the company's opportunity costs by 75%.
