Radar target signal modeling and validation
Article Abstract:
The performance of a radar system is greatly affected by the electromagnetic scattering properties of the targets to be tracked. A key target parameter is the radar cross section, defined as an effective area that scatters in incident power in the direction of the radar receiver. Two target modeling approaches used at Raytheon and their validation are described. One of the methods computes a composite signal and equivalent cross section and glint from a number of discrete point scatterers. The other method, a statistical model, combines filtered and scaled noise sources from a random number generator to produce the desired results. The outputs presented include plots of sample radar cross section, glint and angle tracking error histories as functions of target aspect and target aspect rate. There are also comparisons of results computed by the two methods, as well as with actual flight data. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Using Simulation for Policy Evaluation in the Electric Utility Industry
Article Abstract:
The Electric utility Planning and Policy Analysis Model (EPPAM) is a dynamic system for analysis of energy production and demand relationships. The model uses feedback loops describing demand and construction and is one of only a few similar models to use feedback loops. The present study uses the model to assess the impact of shorter lead times required for power plant construction and modeling. The model is also used to analyze the effects of plant overbuilding on utility rates. The validity of the model is assessed according to reproduction of past behavior, response to perturbations, and actual use. Charts illustrating the effect of overbuilding on rates, a table of oil blackout cost ratios, and diagrams describing the EPPAM model are presented.
