R&D spending outlook remains strong for 1999
Article Abstract:
US industries are expected to increase their R&D spending in 1999 because of the continuing strength of the economy according to Schonfeld & Assocs Inc. Among the industries with the largest expected R&D spending for 1999 are motor vehicles-$26.6 billion, pharmaceuticals-$29.1 billion and telecommunications equipment-$20 billion. A 1.2% decline in R&D spending by computer and office equipment makers is, however, forecasted. The other industries with high expected R&D expenditures are prepackaged software, computer communications equipment, semiconductors and specialty chemicals.

Pressure points
Article Abstract:
Employing a pressurization smoke control system allows smoke to be directed away from escape routes while keeping the area clear of smoke which allows greater access for fire fighters. Air fans create a downward pressure which prevents smoke escaping to other parts of the building. It is essential to have pressurization smoke control systems fitted by qualified engineers who are fully experienced.

Positive outlook
Article Abstract:
The use of positive input ventilation reduces the cost of heating while being easy and quick to install. The fan unit is usually placed in the loft cavity, drawing partially heated air from the loft space back down through the house. The system benefits house owners by replacing stall air with fresh, yet warm air, thus reducing the amount of energy needed to fully heat air coming into the house.
