Reasoning and Natural Explanation
Article Abstract:
Reasoning is basically an internal mental process which cannot be directly accessed. Explanation is a way to refer to reasoning by verbal processes. Explanations can be represented by trees with internal nodes corresponding to three major types of justification: citing a reason, giving an example and eliminating alternatives. Explanation production can then be considered as transformations on a tree. Pointers in the tree represent one or more foci of explanations. Analysis of actual conversations of humans involved in explanations provides examples of the ordering of and embedding of explanation trees. Explanations are also a social process involving assumptions and predispositions which influence what occurs.

Distributed Architecture and Parallel Non-Directional Search for Knowledge-Based Cartographic Feature Extraction Systems
Article Abstract:
Some problems in using expert systems to understand images and remote cartographic features are distortions caused by topography, the sensing mechanism, the recording mechanism and the flight path of the carrying vehicle. Object definition, image processing and object recognition and modeling are discussed. Distributed problem solving is discussed, including its nature, distributed expert systems and an example of an image understanding system. Control aspects are presented.
