Riche's resignation leaves 2000 census method uncertain
Article Abstract:
Census Dir Martha Farnsworth Riche has resigned from her post on Jan 30, 1998, which may jeopardize her proposed use of statistical sampling for the year 2000 census under. For two years as the Census Bureau's head, Farnsworth pushed for the use of sampling to do away with the inaccuracies encountered in the 1990 census which undercounted about 4 million people. However, Congress and the Clinton Administration seemed reluctant to implement the statistical sampling method and called for studies on the constitutionality of the approach and a dress rehearsal of the 2000 census.

What's up down under?
Article Abstract:
The government of Queensland, Australia, instituted a policy that necessitated manufactured products to be ISO 9000 registered to improve the standards of quality of goods, services and the industry itself. Concern for the international competitiveness of Australian industries urged the government to focus on maintaining a competitive level of quality. The Labor Party, which came to power after the 1989 elections, supported the policy and urged companies to complete registration by the middle of 1991.
