Safe and sound
Article Abstract:
Electrical contractors need to ensure that they keep pace with new developments in security systems because the market is expanding and becoming more complex. Access systems require a swipe card, a controller to interpret the data and a computer programme to manage the system. This is likely to evolve into retina matching or fingerprinting. Integrated systems which respond to an emergency and instruct access control systems to open emergency doors are also likely to appear. Alarm systems may become voice controlled and have alarm verification systems to prevent false alarms going off.

Ringing in the voice
Article Abstract:
Voice alarm systems are being used in public places but there is no fully acceptable standard for their installation and use. Voice alarms are more effective that bells and tones in alerting people to danger. Their installation in public buildings has, however, been delayed by the lack of an acceptable British Standard. BS 5839 makes no provision for speech and BS 7443 is subject to revision. Voice alarm systems can be centralised or decentralised and their technical development will depend on public reaction.
