Solar, so good: summer approaches and it's time to catch those rays. But we're not talking about that Greek island retreat
Article Abstract:
The practicalities of solar power should be examined as conventional power sources will dwindle in the early part of the next century, and researchers at the Newcastle Photovoltaic Applications Centre (NPAC) have estimated that the cladding of only 10% of available building surfaces could meet the UK's average daytime electrical demand in summer. The NPAC is monitoring photovoltaic modules integrated into a rainscreen overcladding which will give useful information on solar power in use. The Scolar programme in the UK, backed by the government, will see the use of the sun's rays at 100 schools and colleges, and Greenpeace is calling for greater use of solar power.

Lighting accounts for 15-20% of energy consumption in the UK and the Energy Savings Trust has initiated Lightswitch, an energy efficiency programme, to promote the use of energy efficient lighting. The Trust sees contractors as critical to the success of the scheme, and a network of Lightswitch Registered Contractors is being established. It is offering free registration until the end of March and contractors will also receive business leads and benefit from marketing tools.
