Texas-sized ice-storage saves medical facility big bucks

John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX, is realizing more than $1.5 million in rebates and savings throughout the first five years of operating its new ice-storage system. Installed to reduce steep emergency bills and gain a respectable back-up cooling capacity, the system encompasses 53 miles of thermal-storage coil piping from four 450-ton screw chillers, one 436,000-gallon storage tank, two 800-ton shell-and-tube heat exchangers, a cooling tower and a 250,000-sq-ft building to accommodate mechanical equipment. Aside from providing energy savings of more than $200,000 in the period from June to September, the system also furnished 1,600 tons of backup cooling capacity, and prompted the local utility to award the hospital with a $324,000 rebate for its energy-saving initiatives.

Network allows for remote power monitoring
Article Abstract:
Ingham Regional Medical Center, created by the merger of Lansing General and Ingham Medical Center, sought to monitor and control its power generating systems from throughout the facility. Instead of relying on monitoring instruments found at the generators themselves, Ingham Regional Medical Center opted for system that allowed maintenance and operational staff to monitor and control backup power from either of the two hospital campuses. Encompassing a LonWorks control network into each generator system, the monitoring and control system was designed to display information on a local personal computer, and was subsequently connected to a local-area network that linked the two campuses.
