The best-practice company and other benchmarking myths
Article Abstract:
A survey of manufacturing firms yielded five important lessons about benchmarking. One is that most companies overestimate their performance with about 81% inaccurately seeing themselves as belonging to the top 25% of their industry. Another is that most benchmarking manuals cater to FORTUNE 100 rather than small companies. Companies must also realize that there is no such thing as a best-practice organization.
