Using 'corrosion' to make ceramics

Article Abstract:

Use of 'corrosion' to make ceramics, the volume-identical metal oxidation (VIMOX), is discussed. A metal precursor is formed into a complex shape, oxidized, and a ceramic with the same shape and dimensions results. Topics include displacive compensation of porosity and nonoxide ceramic compositives. The work of Ken Sandhage with a group of metallurgists is reviewed.
