Why the site isn't sound
Article Abstract:
Installers who converted lighting luminaires into emergency lights in the 1980s sometimes did not realise that using rechargeable batteries beside hot transformers would cause the lights to fail within 18 months. Electrical equipment which is converted into emergency lighting has to conform to EU product standards. It is unlikely that on-site conversions will comply with these standards because the process is complicated and special testing equipment is needed which will not be available on site. The tests have to be completed if the product is to be CE marked.

Simply not the best: can construction site performance really be as lousy as it is supposed to be compared with other UK industries?
Article Abstract:
An ECA led group is to look at the state of the building engineering services market, beginning with a pilot study. It aims to show how contractors compare with those in other industries. The study has been awarded 150,000 pounds sterling from the government, as part of the Government Sector Challenge programme. There is a lack of quantifiable data in the industry and the introduction of a measurement scheme, broadly based on benchmarking principles, would be accessible to small and medium sized businesses.

'Chain of events' led to site death
Article Abstract:

The coroner found that a chain of events had brought about Webster's death on Jul 22 1992 and that prosecution under the Health and Safety at Work Act would be likley. Webster was killed whuile working on an electrical control cubicle which he believed had no power supply. A temporary supply had been installed and was on but Webster and his colleagues had not been informed.
