Power to the network: what are the factors to consider when specifying an uninterruptible power supply for a computer network?
Article Abstract:
Uninterruptible power supply (ups) technology has seen the development of line interactive devices offering a hybrid solution, and there are several important areas a contractor needs to consider when choosing the type of ups required for high levels of protection on a computer network. These include the criticality of the computer system, calculating the load to be protected, system configuration and topology, whether online, offline or line interactive. The ups needs to be monitored and controlled by the network manager, involving simple software, or fully interactive network management protocol communications.

Whined and fined: It's time that companies topped bleating about health and safety and looked at their responsibilities
Article Abstract:
Serious electrically-related fires have resulted in more than 350 million pounds sterling of damage between 1990 and 1996, and cases of burns to employees and self employed operatives amounted to 3,500 between 1989-90 and 1995-96. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 thee have been 356 convictions and fines have increased to 1,959 pounds sterling. It is important to known the regulations and apply them, and there are potential savings to be made from better management and regular maintenance, with process management the key to controlling risk.

Dangerous liaisons: Specifying and installing equipment in hazardous areas is a tricky business
Article Abstract:
Electrical equipment is a potential hazard where there is a mix of explosive gases and air, sparks and hot surfaces. Installers should have a definition of the area were equipment will be installed and must understand the different hazards to ensure the correct selection of equipment. Hazardous areas are classified into zones, gas groups and temperatures. Operation and maintenance of equipment throughout its expected lifetime may also be a consideration.
