socket to 'em: what are the most important considerations when buying a new house? Most people want lots of electrical sockets, usually for convenience but safety should be the most important factor
Article Abstract:
Most people require plenty of electrical sockets when purchasing a new house, according to a survey. However many houses are still built without sufficient electrical sockets and this can be dangerous, with the myriad of electrical appliances in use. More than 15% of domestic fires were due to faulty electrics according to Home Office statistics. Adaptors can be overloaded and can become unreliable if knocked, or an extension lead tripped over. There are also no legal requirements for wiring standards in England and the Royal Society for the prevention of Accidents believe that wiring regulations, incorporating minimum numbers of electrical sockets, should become law.

A safety bet
Article Abstract:
An electrical control system must meet all the safety requirements laid down by the UK machine safety standard EN 954-1, otherwise the system cannot be guaranteed to be totally safe. The system must be assessed for risk and hazard analysis, following the guidelines set out in EN 954-1. Electrical contractors should fully understand the use of safety control measures, which if chosen incorrectly, could lead to problems. The system should be checked for performance evaluation to ensure the correct category has been chosen.

Socket to 'em Charlie
Article Abstract:
There were many different plugs and sockets when electricity first began to be used in ordinary households in the UK, and many people were wary about safety. It was some time before electrical engineers such as Charles Arnold, who formed The Heavy Current Electric Accessories Company with Charles Belling, could develop safe and reliable sockets.
