Willowing around in sustainability
Article Abstract:
Project Arable Biomass Renewable Energy (ARBRE) has established a commercial wood fuel generating plant at Eggborough, England, the first of its kind in the UK. This will produce a total of 10MW of electricity, with 8MW being supplied to the local grid, meeting the needs of around 18,000 homes. The scheme stems from the government's third Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation, and was one of only three planned gasification plants to receive a contract under this programme. It will burn harvested willow, and will use the resulting gas to provide energy for a gas and steam turbine.

Working with the new regime: the Environment Agency becomes operational on 1 April and planning departments would be well advised to prepare and be aware of its remit
Article Abstract:
The new Environment Agency, which becomes operational in April, will involve the National Rivers Authority, waste regulation authorities and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution. It will be responsible for industrial pollution and waste controls and water environment management. Waste regulation authorities will be devolved from the county councils and there may be a weakening of working links between waste planners and waste regulation officers.
