A travel-cost method of evaluating household hazardous waste disposal services

Article Abstract:

The zonal Clawson-Knetsch travel cost procedure is applied by the household hazardous waste (HHW) disposal services to estimate a demand curve and the consumer surplus in King County, Washington. The consumer surplus analysis is smaller than the HHW collection costs but that derived from the travel cost method is higher than the consumer surplus estimation obtained from survey of the King County habitants. The results of the study raises questions regarding the value of household waste collection services and the help they render to public welfare.

Environmental impacts of solid waste landfilling

Article Abstract:

The environmental impacts of gas and leachate formation mechanisms in landfills and appropriate control measures to eliminate or minimize these impacts were presented. Gas and leachate migration from landfill boundaries and their release to the environment create serious environmental concerns such as potential health hazards, fires and explosions, damage to vegetation, and global warming. Installation of gas recovery, collection and treatment system and hydraulic barriers were found to help control gas and leachate problems, respectively.

The effects of unit pricing system upon household solid waste management: The Korean experience

Article Abstract:

The effects of price incentives under unit pricing system (UPS) on household solid waste generation and recycling in Korea are explored. A simultaneous equation model is used to study the feedback effects between household total solid waste generation and recycling. Various types of unit pricing systems have been adopted, and the volume-based per-bag unit pricing system appears to have been successful.
