Cross-taxonomic potential and spatial transferability of an umbrella species index
Article Abstract:
The umbrella species conferred protection to species in different taxonomic groups using bird and butterfly data from three mountain ranges in the Great Basin. It is suggested that in a given mountain range, umbrella species are effectively identified using data from the same mountain range versus a different mountain range.

Regression-tree modeling of desert tortoise habitat in the central Mojave Desert
Article Abstract:
A geographic information system-based model is presented on habitat use of the desert tortoise in the central Mojave Desert. Findings include avoidance of stony soils, low plant cover, and northern exposure, indicating that parent materials and soil composition are important factors in desert tortoise habitat conservation.

A new method for selection of umbrella species for conservation planning
Article Abstract:
The authors suggest that widespread butterfly taxa, rather than endangered ones, provide more reliable results as an indicator species. While endangered butterflies tend to co-occur with a broader range of species, their distributions are restricted and usually cannot be managed to produce sensitivity data.
