Ecological and socioeconomic impacts of 1998 coral mortality in the Indian Ocean: an ENSO impact and a warning of future change?

Article Abstract:

The year 1998 was the warmest year since the recording of temperature 150 years ago. Furthermore, the 1990s have been the warmest decade ever recorded. The strongest El Nino was recorded in 1998. Consequently, high water temperatures were observed in the tropical Indian Ocean between 3 to 5 degrees above normal. As a result, many corals, reefs, and fish stocks in this region died.
