Influence of strain-rate on coagulation kinetics
Article Abstract:
Timothy Kramer and Mark Clark should be congratulated for proving convincingly that the root-mean-square velocity gradient or the 'G value' cannot be accurately used for determining flocculation rates. This further shows that the G value cannot also be used for floc breakup; mixing; induced circulation in channels; short-circuiting in tanks; and cleansing of filter media during backwashing. However, the transformation used by Camp and Stein in 1943 to obtain the 2D flow deserves further study as flows with zero normal stress do not exist.

The interpretation and misinterpretation of mortality rate measures
Article Abstract:
An algebraic equation for measuring mortality based on an exponential population decline model is presented. The equation provides the rate of population mortality by getting the quotient of the logarithm of the population counts at the beginning and end of the counting process over the measurement interval or time. Application of the equarion revealed small discrepancies, except for large populations. This suggests that the equation can be used to efficiently measure population declines.
