Modeling hydrologic alterations to a developing wetland in an abandoned borrow pit
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on management alternatives for modifying the duration and extent of ponding at a developing wetland in northern Texas. Causing minimal environmental disruption and needing little maintenance, these alternatives include installing a slurry wall to back up groundwater, raising water levels in a river channel and applying water directly to the wetland. Results suggested that diverting surface water is an effective management technique for groundwater-fed wetlands with sediments of low to moderate hydraulic conductivity.

The monoculture vs. rotation strategies in forestry: Formalization and prediction by means of Markov-chain modeling
Article Abstract:
An approach to formalization and modeling forest dynamics in the long term by means of Markov chains, the monoculture strategy resulting in an absorbing chain and the rotation one in regular chain is suggested. Analysis of regular chain reveals an opportunity to achieve particular management objectives within the rotation strategy, in particular, to get the distribution of forest types in accordance with an adopted hierarchy of their commercial values.

Greening of a campus restaurant at Stockholm University: sustainable development audits by means of the SDR methodology
Article Abstract:
A new technique called sustainable development records (SDR) was applied to evaluate quantitatively the environmental practices of a campus restaurant at Stockholm University. The SDR technique has three components: services, operation and resource base. The resource base determines the social, financial and environmental aspects of the restaurant's performance. The results of the sustainable development audit on the restaurant are discussed.
