Face to Face - J. Peter Grace
Article Abstract:
When President Reagan was looking for someone to head his private sector survey on ways to control costs in the bureaucracy of the government, he called J. Peter Grace. Grace is the head of one of the largest conglomerates around, W.R. Grace & Co. Grace, who compares the federal government to a large conglomerate, readily agreed to take the job. He gathered 161 fellow executives together, and this group researched the government thoroughly, and came up with a 656-page report in which the commission (which had come to be known as the Grace Commission) recommended almost 2,500 things which could be done to save money. These range from using travel agents to paying less for parts (the Pentagon spends ninety-one dollars for a three cent screw). Grace is very enthusiastic about how common business practices could be successfully used at the federal level, but feels that unless the people care enough to do something which would make the federal government change its spending habits, the deficit cycle and government inefficiency will continue, with the taxpayers getting it in the end.

On the practice of ecology
Article Abstract:
Scientists involved in the study of ecology have expressed their frustration over the dearth of new ideas emerging from their efforts. This malaise may be due to the inherent need for all scientific disciplines to continually replace theories with new ones that conform to all observations. To answer this need, scientists must approach ecology and subject it to critical analysis with the aim of developing theories that may be tested empirically.
