Reindeer influence on ecosystem processes in the tundra

Article Abstract:

The changes in soil temperature are important for the litter decomposition rate and have an impact on nutrient availability for plant uptake. The mechanisms behind the effects of herbivores on primary production is examined and found that grazing can increase the primary production through enhancing the soil nutrient cycling rate, even in a long term perspective on an ecological timescale.

Burrowing owls and burrowing mammals: Are ecosystem engineers interchangeable as facilitators?

Article Abstract:

Interactions between burrowing owls and two burrowing mammals, hairy armadillos and plains vizcachas were examined and whether these ecosystem engineers are interchangeable for owls were determined. Armadillos and vizcachas are not interchangeable for owls were indicated by the data on reproduction and habitat.

Influence of harvest, climate and wolf predation on Yellowstone elk, 1961-2004

Article Abstract:

The models based on elk-related data prior to wolf reintroduction are built and assessed to assess the contribution of wolf predation to the elk decline. It was suggested that between 1995 and 2004 wolf predation was primarily compensatory.
