A comparison of vermicomposting and composting
Article Abstract:
Vermicomposting has distinct advantages over conventional composting. Vermicomposting, which is a biooxidation and stabilization process which utilizes the action of earthworms and microorganisms, produces a stable nontoxic material suitable for use as a soil conditioner. Vermicompost has excellent structure, porosity, aeration, drainage and moisture-holding capacity. Vermicompost has a lower bioavailable heavy metal content than conventional compost. New vermicomposting technology applicable to large scale waste processing is already being developed.

Going bulk for yard trimmings collection
Article Abstract:
Recycling of yard trimmings in San Jose, CA, has now reached 130,000 tons a year. Yard trimmings make a large contribution to the city's overall diversion rate of 43%. Bulk collection of yard trimmings now covers 181,000 single-family households, along with multi-family homes and city facilities such as community gardens. Diversion rates for yard trimmings are high because the scheme permits unlimited setouts of grass clippings, small branches, brush and leaves.

Vermicomposting in urban settings
Article Abstract:
California project evaluates commercial composter for key factors such as air flow, feedstocks that include food residuals, and impact on moisture content. Accordingly, the BioSystem 500 was tested and identified as a good vermicomposting unit that would divert food residuals from schools, buildings, restaurants and businesses in 2002.
