Applying yard trimmings compost to Florida highways
Article Abstract:
Florida's Dept. of Transportation (DOT) started composting yard trimmings during its maintenance operations on major highways. The process entailed the composting of large amounts of vegetation found along the highways. The composting was usually done in borrowed pits. This crude approach was stopped when a fire broke out as a result of improper composting operations. While the composting operations ceased temporarily, the DOT later looked into more scientific ways of producing and utilizing compost. This compost would eventually be used as fertilizer for highway vegetation.

Compost as pesticide - from research to product
Article Abstract:
Biosolids compost effectively suppresses soilborne diseases in crops and has no reentry regulations in fields unlike fungicides. The amended compost is cheap and consists of animal manures and composted yard trimmings. The Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Experimental Use Permit to the Earthgro Company to use professional potting mixes. The Alternative Agricultural Research and Commercialization Center have invested in the marketing of the potting mix.
