Recycling at the '96 Olympics

Article Abstract:

The International Olympic Committee policies have prompted adoption of a Waste and Recycling Strategy during 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Atlanta. The committee aims to divert 85% of the 9000 tons of solid wastes likely to be generated. Waste collections include plastic bottles, cans and mixed papers. Plans are on for source separation of organic materials for recycling. Spectator education about recycling is simple and direct. Materials processing and sorting will use multiple processors and the composting site at Rockdale County.

Special diversion methods for special events

Article Abstract:

The organizers of the Ben & Jerry's 'One World One Heart Festival' recycle the large number of food scraps and containers left behind by the people attending the festival. A collection plan of recyclable materials was developed for the festival. Biodegradable spoons and paper plates must be used in the festival as they are easily recyclable. Two biodegradable products, namely ice cream containers and biodegradable bags, were introduced in the previous year's festival.
