Composting plus recycling equals 70 percent diversion
Article Abstract:
Solid waste management is found to be easier when recycling of waste materials is accompanied by composting of the organic portion which otherwise cannot be saved. This is accomplished by initially separating compostable from noncompostable waste. The compostable portion is transported to the composting facility and the remaining noncompostable waste is measured to get a mass balance on the total waste stream. Active participation from many households has proven the process to be effective with an average of 40% of the waste collected for recycling and 30% for composting. The rest are disposed.

Four stream residential collection in Holland
Article Abstract:
The Netherlands banned landfilling unprocessed waste on Jan. 1, 1996, requiring all residential waste to undergo incineration, composting or mixed waste processing before disposal. However, as a three-year full demonstration project that began in Jul. 1991 shows, diverting residential waste is less costly when composting is selected over landfilling and incineration. If the results of the project are to be followed, it would be better for the Dutch to compost their waste than to landfill or incinerate them.
