Automating the sludge pumping/polymer metering system
Article Abstract:
The Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) in Toronto, Ontario, has installed a computer controlled system to regulate the plant's polymer injection rate. The state-of-the-art system, part of the plant's Phase II expansion that began in 1997, incorporates a number of progressive cavity pumps for both sludge pumping and polymer metering. WCPC's success, which has resulted in the decision to adopt the system for the Phase I system as well, has resulted in significant cost savings for the sewage treatment plant.

Controls save sinking systems at two wastewater treatment plants
Article Abstract:
The Series 90 programmable logic controllers (PLCs) made by GE Fanuc Automation, were used in upgrading the old centralized computer system of the North Buffalo Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the obsolete decision control system (DCS) of the Osborne Wastewater Treatment Plant, both in Greensboro, NC. The use of PLCs led to a 65% reduction in maintenance costs in North Buffalo while Osborne's obsolete DCS was salvaged by replacing outdated parts.

Head losses in a siphon
Article Abstract:
Evaluation of a trunk line sewer system with a siphon that discharged across the Quinnipiac River in Connecticut showed the hydraulic slope of the pipe's water surface to be substantially less than the invert. Meter readings of sewer flow indicated ideal water siphon elevation conditions and siphon requirements. These include head losses characterized by influent pipe straight and inverts elevation that allowed free discharge conditions.
