Cocomposting economics have double rewards
Article Abstract:
The city of Texarkana, TX, launched a composting and recycling program for biosolids and yard trimmings at its South Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. Local government agencies provided grants for the construction of the composting facility and purchase of necessary equipment. Yard trimmings and scrap wood are picked up at curbside or delivered directly by public and private yard tree trimmers to the composting site. The finished product is marketed primarily to area residents to be used as fertilizer for flowers and plants. Other consumers of compost include landscape contractors and nurseries as well as government departments.

Lessons learned from on-farm composting
Article Abstract:
Six farms in Virginia received municipal yard trimmings for composting and agricultural use in a scheme created by Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority and the City of Charlotesville. Five of the farms composted the leaves with chicken or turkey litter delivered from neighbouring poultry operations. All the farms are still composting for on-farm use or sale of the finished material, while three are composting at the same level as during the pilot scheme or at a higher level. There were significant variations in how the piles performed at each farm.
