Supermarket composting goes big time
Article Abstract:
The Vons Companies located in Arcadia, California started in July 1994 recycling of the food scraps and vegetable trimmings and spoiled produce from 28 of its grocery shops in San Diego. Jennie McCarthy, Von's administrator of environment and safety, expects the expenditure to decrease though it is premature to calculate the benefits. Isolating all produce residues as well as wax-coated cardboard produce boxes will decrease the total amount of disposal at each store by almost half.

Composting regulations stir up California farmers
Article Abstract:
Farmers are unhappy with some inequities and uncertainties raised by the California Integrated Waste Management Board's new compost facility regulations. New Era Farm Service's Ralph Jurgens, for example, notes that the new rules remove incentives for the firm to compost manure, when it can sell raw manure on a virtually unregulated basis. Most farmers appear to remain hopeful that the regulations' problems will be addressed.
