Backstop technology and growth: Doomsday or steady state?
Article Abstract:
A backstop technology generates resources at a fixed marginal cost on an indefinite, long-term basis. According to Heal's two-factor model of backstop technology, capital and resources alone generate output, with consumption either growing or decaying exponentially, or is constant. This formulation is ambiguous because Doomsday could occur in spite of the presence of a backstop technology. If labor is a productive factor, a steady-state equilibrium is attained just like in standard optimal growth models. This scenario describes the three-factor model.
