Central European approach to on-farm composting
Article Abstract:
The city of Graz, Austria, launched a project in 1992 which encouraged local farmers to use biowastes from their farms to make compost, thereby, reducing city spending on compost operations by 50%. Project coordinator Gerald Dunst made farmers realize the value of natural compost in farming. Dunst encouraged farmers to make their own compost by getting the government to pay participants 400-500 Austrian shillings per metric ton of waste they convert to compost. They are also allowed the free use of the resulting compost for their farms, along with the option to sell unused compost.

Moving municipal organics to agricultural markets
Article Abstract:
Carlyle Consulting is a waste management consulting firm from Malibu, CA, which specializes in coordinating the transfer of municipal organic wastes to farm lands. Its president, Bill Irwin, realized that to develop markets for the municipal organics, he would have to educate farmers on its availability and the costs of spreading them. Aside from agriculture, Irwin's firm has developed additional markets for municipal organics such as erosion control, fire prevention barriers and residential landscape.
