Agricultural and commercial composting distinction
Article Abstract:
Composting is considered an agricultural activity when integrated into the overall farm operation in the form of soil management, crop management and waste management. A farmer involved in composting of materials from off the farm, and sale of the compost in market indulges in a commercial operation. The amount of bulking material arriving into the farm should be enough for farm manure management and cannot exceed it. An upper limit of four times the volume of off-farm material to on-farm manure should be enforced. A third party should determine whether the composting is an integral part of the farm operations.

On-farm composting of municipal organics
Article Abstract:
Rodale Institute's Rural/Urban Resource Center in Pennsylvania examined the possibility of yard waste management partnership between municipalities and farms. Research identified the barriers to the undertaking such as cost of material transport to the farm and possible contamination of such materials. Farmer reliability, environmental regulations and education also had to be considered. Adequate farmer compensation, proper coordination between farms and municipalities as well as upgrading environmental laws will overcome these barriers and guarantee the success of such venture.
