Using MSW compost in nursery stock production
Article Abstract:
The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station conducted two experiments to investigate the effectiveness of municipal solid waste (MSW) compost as a mulch or soil amendment to control weeds in field-grown nursery stock production. The experiments were aimed at helping nurseries mitigate topsoil loss and prolong the usefulness of their land. The Lockwood Farm in Mt Carmel and the Valley Laboratory in Windsor were used as pilot sites for the study. Results showed that three of the four species of trees grown with MSW compost demonstrated favorable responses.

Researchers study vermicomposting of municipal and papermill sludges
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the CNR Istituto per la Chimica del Terreno in Pisa, Italy, have been investigating the vermicomposting of municipal and papermill sludges. Pilot scale experiments have been undertaken on mixtures of aerobic-anaerobic sludges made up of aerobically treated urban sewage sludge with increasing percentages of anaerobically treated papermill sludge. It was possible to develop an accelerated aerobic composting process which produced a high quality humic vermicompost for use in the field as soil organic amendment.
