Solid waste composting trends and projects
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's large cities usually handle municipal solid waste (MSW) through transfer stations and then at final disposal sites. In 1995, the average organic fraction of MSW in these cities was 72%. Similarly, the agro-industrial solid wastes are dominated by organic matter. Indonesia now has many composting plants for MSW and agro-industrial solid wastes, with systems used included open bin, vermicomposting and Caspari. The open bin system is used to handle solid wastes generated in small amounts each day.

Low-tech composting in tropical countries.: a city in Indonesia uses open windrow and bin systems to transform dumps into production sites that supply needed nutrients to farm crops
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian city of Sleman is using open windrow and bin systems to transform waste dumps into sites producing much-needed nutrients for farm crops. The municipal government has upgraded the Tambakboyo composting plant to produce 1.9 t/d of compost. The plant's success has prompted the city to build extra facilities in Sinduadi and Pringwulung, the former using open windrows and the latter using open bin systems.
