Charting municipal recycling costs
Article Abstract:
The Pennsylvania Soft Drink Association conducted a study among eight towns and cities to assess the cost effectiveness of their recycling programs. In six of the communities, recycling costs were less than the costs for refuse in 1991. Pittsburgh's recycling costs are likely to reduce after translucent bags, available in grocery stores for people to dispose waste bottles and cans in, are collected once a week by the municipal crew. In Wellsboro, large scale processing and marketing of materials and free labor in collection of recyclables tended to reduce costs.

The economics of aluminum recycling
Article Abstract:
The aluminum recycling rate went up from62% in 1991 to 74% in 1992. The increase was seen despite the decrease in priceof primary aluminum to 54 cents per pound which is half its price in 1988. Virgin aluminum's drop in prices could adversely affect profits in recycled aluminum but economic analysts are optimistic that the recycling rate will continue to rally upwards. Consulting firm Resource Strategies Inc in Exton, PA, predicts a conservative rise in rate up to 70%.
