Commercial and residential organics pilot
Article Abstract:
Lewiston, ME, was the site of a recent six-week pilot study on the viability of collecting and composting separated organic waste. Under the program, waste was collected from four commercial and two institutional establishments and more than 500 single family homes. The collected waste was then composted, with extensive analyses of the waste being undertaken at various points on the composting process. Lewiston still has to evaluate the data before it can decide on a long-term collection and composting program. Other communities are also looking to the study to help them decide on whether to adopt collection and composting programs of their own.

Handling diversified feedstocks at a compost site
Article Abstract:
One of the most important aspects of compost facility management is the proper management of incoming materials. The former owners of Organic Technologies Corp. (OTC) learned their lesson the hard way when their neighbors complained about the strong odors coming from their facility. The odors were caused by the improper containment of liquid waste products. Their problem was solved by putting wood chips into the windrows, with an additional layer on top, thereby acting as both bulking agent and low cost biofilter at the same time.
