Compost plays role in riverfront restoration

Article Abstract:

Biosolids compost has been used in the soil mix for many of the plants in the new park under construction in central Pittsburgh, PA. The park is only 35 ft wide, and this makes it particularly important to have the correct soil. Land scientist Dr Phil Craul, who was responsible for designing the soil profile for the park, selected biosolids compost because it contains nutrients and trace metals that play a role in soil sustainability. It was vital to ensure that the compost was very mature and stable, as the soils will be flooded each year.

Prudent maintenance practice: Conscientious operators of large grinders follow guidelines to keep equipment running smoothly with minimum downtime and replacement costs

Article Abstract:

The grinding equipment used by composters and mulchers to process wood, construction and demolition debris and yard trimmings, needs to be properly maintained. However the first stage in good grinder maintenance should occur before the equipment is even purchased, by properly specifying a piece of equipment, depending on the type of material to be ground. Some companies believe that operators are the most qualified to undertaken maintenance and repairs rather than a separate mechanic, as they experience the equipment problems first hand.
