Compost quality standards and guidelines in Canada

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) updated voluntary standards and guidelines for compost quality in 2005. The science-based review process by the SCC outlines content requirements for moisture, total organic matter, foreign matter, trace elements, microbiological characteristics, and maturity and stability.

Canadian composting industry on the grow

Canada had over 300 composting facilities processing more than 1.6 million t/y of organic materials in 1999, against some 100 facilities in 1994. The composting industry is set for further growth as new compost markets are developed.
