Compost supply and demand

Article Abstract:

Demand for compost in the US is 10 times that of its supply according to the quantitative analysis of Battelle.According to the Battelle study, the approximate figure for the total production of compost that comes from four major sources such as municipal solid waste (MSW), sewage sludge, horticultural/silvicultural waste and agricultural waste is 100 million cubic yards annually. MSW contributes the bulk for the source of compost production with about 30 million tons of the total 51 million. There are nine markets that comprise 95% of the demand for compost the leading three of which are agriculture, silviculture and sod production.

Using compost to treat wastewater effluent

Article Abstract:

The Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania developed a land experiment to treat wastewater effluent, which is having the ability to filter out nutrients from the wastewater effluent using inherent soil properties and associative vegetation and microorganism assemblages. The soil on this land are an excellent filter media to hold nutrients in the wastewater in place until the plants take them up and use them for growth and filtered water eventually percolates through the deep soil profile.
