Correctional complex launches into food residuals composting
Article Abstract:
Rikers Island Correctional Facility in New York City completed its compost processing facility in Jan 1997. The facility, called an agitated bay composting system, has a capacity of 32 cubic yards/loading and is intended to process the 20,000 tons of garbage and food residuals that are discarded in the correctional facility annually. The food residuals are collected after every meal in 44-gallon containers with attachable casters and lids. The Rikers Island Farm Project has announced its intention to use the compost processed at the correction facility for its vegetable production operations.
