Dealing with yard trimmings in the Puget Sound
Article Abstract:
Regulatory agencies, in cooperation with solid waste departments and private composting facility operators, launched a regional strategy for managing yard trimmings in Puget Sound, WA, in 1998. The project was conceived in response to odor complaints against the Cedar Grove Composting facility. To remedy the odor problems, yard trimmings were diverted from Cedar Grove to composting facilities in Seattle/King County, Pierce County and Snohomish County. Regulators also developed long-term strategies for handling yard trimmings especially during the peak spring and early summer seasons.

Ten years of home composting
Article Abstract:
Household composting was introduced in Seattle, WA, in 1986 by the Seattle Solid Waste Utility. The first Master Composter Program focused on grasscycling, food composting, progress measurement and workshop implementation. Ten years hence, 41% of Seattle households have been successfully composting some 8,300 tons of yard trimmings. To initiate the project, free cedar slat yard waste compost bins were distributed to households in 1990.
