From site to market in the composting business

Mass Natural and Molly Hill Farms are two Massachusetts-based companies owned by Bill Page that are engaged in the processing of manure, short paper fibers, coal ash, rice hulls, sawdust and salad dressing into compost. Molly Hill Farms, a hen laying operation, generates 8000 tons of poultry manure annually, 6000 tons of which are turned into compost by Mass Natural while the rest are sold for land use. Mass Natural manufactures 55,000 to 60,000 cy of compost and 60,000 to 75,000 cy of Topshelf, a combination of 70% loam and 30% compost, annually and sells them by bulk.

Haulers play key role in organics recycling
Article Abstract:
Muskoka Containerized Services (MCS) is operating an indoor composting facility in Bracebridge, ON, through Compostit, a separate company. The facility, which opened in Oct 1996, is licensed to handle 10,000 tons of materials a year, mainly receiving materials from central Ontario. A full scale curbside collection scheme will be operating for all 3,400 households in the town by mid-1997, and MCS has already been involved in a pilot collection program. It also started collection of food residuals from commercial operations in Oct 1996.

Wastewater treatment plants go in-vessel
Article Abstract:
The Wilmington, Vermont wastewater treatment plant began processing its 2.5 tons/week of biosolids in 1994 using a CompTainer system from Green Mountain Technologies. The unit is designed to evenly distribute pressurized air and the materials are composted for 21 to 30 days. Temperatures are kept uniform by reversing aeration. The finished compost is sold to local residents for use as mulch.
