Taking recycling to the streets
Article Abstract:
The city of Portland, OR, through its Office of Transportation, Bureau of Maintenance has successfully developed a program in which materials collected in its cleaning and recycling operations are reused in various city operations. These include the recycling of asphalt rubble which are used in road repair, the washing and reuse of antiskid gravel and sand and the use of street sweeping to cover landfills. Portland's leaf composting operations is managed by Stormwater Management Inc. This arrangement has resulted in annual savings of $100,000 for the city.

Recycling in the electronics industry
Article Abstract:
The implementation of solid waste environmental leadership and learning program at the Rockwell Avionics & Communications plant for recycling waste materials has resulted in 88% reduction in the refuse bound for landfill. The company's wastes are collected by Goodwill Industries and the reusable items such as antistatic plastic boxes, plastic bags and cardboard boxes are sorted out. Plastic items that are not reusable are sent to a plastic recycler. At Rockwell, items such as trays, three-ring binders, tubes and paper goods are distributed to the schools.
