Community composting in West Africa
Article Abstract:
An experimental composting project was established in an urban residential area called Aglogoshie in Accra, Ghana. Twenty households in the 5,000-strong community agreed to participate and were given short seminars on the proper separation of solid wastes. Through composting, the community was able to reduce average weekly solid waste production by as much as 62%. In addition, the study highlighted several potential barriers to effective community composting. These barriers include negative attitudes among local officials, lack of knowledge about refuse separation and land tenure.

Testing carbon sources for manure composting
Article Abstract:
There has been a rise in milk cow numbers in New Mexico to 208,000 head in 1998 from from 67,000 in 1985, and this has prompted research into composting manure due to limits to land application. The projects have been carried out by the Waste Management Education and Research Consortium (WERC), which is part of New Mexico State University's College of Engineering. Six combinations have been tested involving yard trmmings, pecan wood trimmings, cotton gin waste, paper mill fiber, and jeans processing residuals, mixed with dairy manure.
