How much insurance is enough for a water utility?
Article Abstract:
Water utilities may be better off in periodically evaluating their insurance coverage and the dollar amounts of coverage. Most utilities carry traditional forms of insurance protection. However, changes in the water industry have created new risks that might not be covered by existing policies. These new risks include water quality claims, cleanup and remediation costs for contamination or chemical release at water supply and treatment plants and cleanup/remediation costs for contamination at customers' sites and liability for inadequate disclosure of water content.

Peaker plants pique water quality issue
Article Abstract:
New electric power generating facilities called peaker plants have begun to proliferate as a result of industry deregulation. Peaker plants require water, and when such a facility is proposed in or near the service area of a water utility, a number of issues can arise. For instance, if a peaker plant opts to obtain its water from its own source, the water utility must evaluate the potential impact of the former's decision on the latter's groundwater or surface supply.

Water rates: is it time for a new paradigm?
Article Abstract:
Continued growth of cities may leave some areas with water shortages in less than 50 years. A new ratemaking system is needed to increase the value of water as a resource, and to ensure that utilities are able to cover costs.
