German project reconverts a sanitary landfill
Article Abstract:
A project for reconverting sanitary landfills has been going on at the Burghof landfill near Stuttgart, Germany, since September 1993. A total of almost 53,700 metric tons of material has been excavated from the landfill and sorted. Part of the salvaged material is recycled. Of the material processed 17.5 percent by weight was transferred to a waste-to-energy facility, 70.5 percent was compacted and returned to landfill, and about 12 percent by weight was reusable.

Latest progress in anaerobic digestion
Article Abstract:
There is currently no US federal policy on anaerobic digestion, unlike many other countries, such as China, Germany, India, Sweden and Denmark. The search for alternative energy resources in the mid and late 1970s led to investigations into small and medium scale anaerobic digesters. Several demonstration projects transferring sewage treatment plant technology to the farm were developed. Expanding the AD process to recover methane also has much potential.
