Managing solid waste in Brazil
Article Abstract:
In a survey conducted by CEMPRE, an industry group sponsored in Rio de Janeiro in 5000 cities of Brazil, 60 composting facilities were found in the country and Porto Alegre's curbside recycling programme was found to serve 79% of the 1.1 million citizen and it costs approximately $88/ton. There is an annual production of 500 million tons of coconuts in Brazil and out of the 90,000 tons of municipal solid waste collected daily 1% is composted.

Marketing wood waste for fuel
Article Abstract:
Wood wastes, separated from the landfill waste stream and recycled under specific conditions, find potential markets as fuels. Energy content, cleanliness, particle size and transportation costs are factors that affect the value of wood for fuel. The benefits of wood fuels include economical price, renewability, and local availability from several sources.
